Summary: Expensive Disaster 2010-05-05
Comment: Installed a WRT300N for a client who wished to access the internet wirelessly from a garage about 150' behind the house (open space in between). Signal wouldn't carry through the metal garage building so I set up a Linksys access point at the garage to act as a bridge; the access point was wired to the remote computer. After several hours of tweaking, nothing. After another hour and a half with Linksys on the phone a third line tech chimed up with the info that that particular access point won't work with this router and indicated a router which can be configured as an access point.

Purchased the second router, an appropriate cow-pie like POS from Cisco. Before I wasted more time trying to make it work, I called back to Cisco's tech support and spent almost an hour trying the settings they indicated all to no avail. ANOTHER second line tech finally admitted that nothing works with the WRT300N to create a bridge and actually the two adapters my client had on older laptops would be spotty at best even though one of them was Linksys (both were G's).

I treasure the WRT54G's. If a client with one wants to upgrade or doesn't need them anymore, I latch on to them post haste and recycle them. I wonder how a company that made such a stalwart iconic piece of equipment as the WRT54G, could foist such garbage as the WRT300N on the public.

Summary: Not That Bad If you Know what your doing 2010-03-30
Comment: I've had this router since after a few months when it came out and its still working. You just have to know how to use it and linksys doesnt tell you at all. If you aren't getting gigabyte speeds wired, then the issue is most likely your cable pinouts are not correct or you dont have a gigabyte NIC. Wireless isn't that great for distance but when set up to use both bands on a PC/Laptop with a dual band card, speeds of over 100mbs. The storage link took me some time to figure out, but if you manage to get it connected which can be tricky but isnt impossible, the biggest issue with keeping it connected is a storage device that has power save options enabled. If the storage device shuts off, then you have to remove all instances of it on the routers memory and get it reconnected as you would for the first time. Thats why if you turn off you power save options, it works great. The newer version of this router seems to be much better, but 3 years and running with this one and no dead in the water issues yet.

Summary: Ok with open source firmware 2010-02-09
Comment: Out of the box, this router can barely run its own management software. Fortunately there's a version of the open source DD-WRT router software that works great. Once I switched to DD-WRT the router has been solid ever since. The range is still less than my older wireless router for which this was a replacement. (With DD-WRT, I'd give 3.5 stars.)

Summary: Lump of Junk 2009-10-28
Comment: I was hoping "N" would be better. Not in this product. Constant drop out with the need to reset. Going back to my old G router was better. I am returning this.

Summary: Atwater 2009-09-15
Comment: This router worked right out of the box. It was very easy to setup and use even when using WPA encription. Lacks a little in range but everything <300 feet has a good connection.
