Product Description
With the latest firmware installed, you will be able to turn off the router's wireless signal altogether at certain times of the day, to save energy. The DIR-615 Wireless N Home Router connects to any modem or ISP box to provide Internet access for computers and other network equipment.Wireless N technology offers more speed, extended coverage and virtually no dead spots while still compatible with previous network standards. This router transfers data at speeds of up to 300 Mbps.Setting the router up is easy even for non-technically minded people, with D-Link Click'n Connect: run directly from the product CD-ROM, this wizard takes you through an interactive step-by-step guide that will get you on-line in a matter of minutes. It also includes a simplified method of setting up wireless encryption, the Wi-Fi Wireless Protect Setup (WPS), which works at the touch of a button.A powerful dual firewall (SPI and NAT) prevents Denial of Service (DoS) attacks and attempts to breach your network from the Internet. You can also define a list of allowed sites to restrict web access during certain periods.

Summary: D-Link DIR 615 2010-03-10
Comment: My DIR-615(N) is only 4 days old and is working just fine with no drop-outs. (Currently using WPA.)It's on 24/7 and has been running cool to the touch. ((My ISP is Comcast (with TV, telephone, and internet). The modem is an RCA Thomson DHG536.))

Using the provided cd setup was super easy for the desktop. Had a problem when I tried to setup my netbook for wireless but it turned out to be operator - my error. D-Link tech support for the netbook problem was there after the third ring and information exchange was good although at times I had to request he speak slower and more clearly (off-shore??).

MaximumPC (Feb 2010) has this DIR-615 rated a "9" which is why I bought it.

Summary: A snap to set up, great price, fast. 2010-03-06
Comment: I am running Vista-64 on an HP system and have a Comcast voice and data modem. I inserted the CD, followed the instructions and it worked with no problem. I didn't even have to reset the modem. My laptop is running Ubuntu Linux with a Belkin card. Fast and reliable.

Summary: Buggy DHCP 2010-03-06
Comment: This would be a good wireless router overall, and a good bargain, if it weren't for the buggy DHCP, which most would consider a core feature of a wireless router. It's possible to work around this shortcoming by manually configuring wireless clients with specific IP addresses. Perhaps D-Link will eventually over a firmware upgrade to fix this -- meanwhile, this bug is a serious shortcoming to an otherwise good wireless router, and people who want a reliable plug-and-play option should not use this router.

The problem manifests as a wireless client failing to complete connection to the router. On the router's internal log, there's a long sequence of entries of the form, "Wireless system with Mac address [numbers separated by colons] disassociate reason 8". This has been a known issue with the DIR-615 for some time, with lots of reports of the problem in the official support forum and elsewhere.

Wireless clients can generally be configured to accept a "manual" or "static" IP address. The straightforward approach is to assign each device an IP address starting with 192.168.0.2, each device getting a unique IP. Netmask is 255.255.255.0, router or default route is 192.168.0.1, and DNS server is 192.168.0.1.

Some people were able to replace the firmware with dd-wrt, but I was unable to do so. That's a solution only for advanced users, in any case.

Summary: Great... at times 2010-03-06
Comment: I was tricked by the low price... The router is good except about once a week I have to reset it otherwise... it won't work... other reviews seem similar...

Summary: Good Features, Terrible Reliability 2010-03-05
Comment: Features are great, when it works. The router frequently drops connections and must be rebooted before anything will work again. D-Link forums are full of people with the same issue, but no fix has been forthcoming.
