Product Review
Product Description
NETGEAR's Cable/DSL 54 Mbps Wireless Router lets you experience the blazing-fast network wireless speeds of 54 Mbps - up to five times faster than the popular 802.11b wireless network. These higher speeds make it a snap to surf the Web, download large files, videoconference, stream high-quality digital movies, MP3 music, and photos, and play online games. This wireless router also works with 802.11b wireless products so you can use it with your existing 802.11b devices and your new 54 Mbps (802.11g) devices. Auto-sensing chooses the fastest connections possible on your 10/100 Mbps wide area network and four local area network ports. True Firewall (SPI) advanced security provides maximum protection from professional hackers. URL blocking and e-mail alerts provide parents with controls to limit access to inappropriate Web sites and monitor children's access. It's simple to install, you just follow the cues shown on your PC screen and your router will be up and running in no time. Smart Wizard auto-detects and configures for the best ISP connection, while UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) makes it easy to use your computers, gaming consoles, and other client devices - wireless and Ethernet - for gaming, instant messaging, and other applications.

The NETGEAR WGR614 54 Mbps 802.11g Wireless Router offers:
  • 802.11g wireless network router for home and office.
  • Four RJ-45 Ethernet ports for wired networking.
  • Configurable network security including double firewall for extra protection.

The WGR614 offers speeds up to 54 Mbps with the 802.11g wireless standard. View larger.
Beautiful Design and Easy Setup
The WGR614 is a very attractive unit about the size of a small paperback with a silver exterior and rounded edges. An included plastic stand lets you stand the router on its edge to take up less space.

The WGR614 makes it easy for even a novice to set up a wireless network: just plug the included Ethernet cable from your internet connection into the router and insert the included CD into any computer on the network, which will provide step-by-step instructions. The WGR614 employs a web-based interface for configuration, and the router will automatically do the initial setup by getting your DNS settings and determining your IP address. The firmware is also upgradeable via the web interface so you can be sure your router will always be up-to-date.

Fast and Secure
Supporting the 802.11g standard, the NETGEAR WGR614 offers wireless data speeds of up to 54 Mbps, making it possible to share a broadband internet connection, stream music without hiccups, watch videos with less load time, and videoconference without problems. Downloading files is up to five times faster than it was with 802.11b. If you still have computers that use 802.11b, don't fret as the router is backwards compatible with the older wireless standard and can be set so all your computers can connect to the network and the WGR614 will automatically figure out the connection type and work accordingly.

In addition to wireless access, there are four 10/100 Mbps RJ-45 Ethernet ports in the back for connecting computers to the network via a faster, wired connection.

The WGR614 offers many security options to ensure your data is private. Double firewall protection keeps your network shielded from outside attacks. To ensure the security of your wireless data, both 40/64-bit, 128-bit, and 152-bit (802.11g only) WEP encryption is available, as well as WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). You can also use MAC address authentication to allow only authorized users onto the network.

Keep Tabs on Kids
This router is an especially good choice for parents as it allows settings to log all sites that are visited, lets you block specific sites based on whether it contains specific keywords, and lets you set time schedules for certain computers to work.

The NETGEAR WGR614 54 Mbps 802.11g Wireless Router is backed by a 1-year warranty.

Summary: netgear makes wireless mad easy 2010-03-11
Comment: Such an easy setup that I was amazed. It was so easy to get it ready that I was surprised. I went to their setup website and in less than 2 minutes it was perfectly working

Summary: First Netgear Wireless Router don't waste your time or money 2010-03-11
Comment: I got this router for $14.00 new so I will say when I first got it it worked great until I reset it to because I forgot my password for my wireless connection. I tried resetting everything three times . I have had it with this router . I would not recommended this to anyone ,including my own worst enemy. It will automatically go back to the main page when logged into any accounts.I even looked for a firmware update their was none available. When I tried watching music videos it would not load it would just freeze up.I disconnected the router and sure enough it was the culprit. This is my first netgear router and will be my last.

Summary: Just Follow The Directions 2010-03-10
Comment: I don't know what peoples' problem is with this router... mine works great. I was getting 10mbps with my old LinkSys router... once day I hooked directly from cable to my computer and my speed doubled to over 20mbps... so I knew my old router was a choke point. I got this new router... and I FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS on the CD Rom to hook it up and it has worked great ever since. I have never had to reboot in nearly 14 months it's been online... but like I said... that's not to say there might not be some bugs out there... but mine works great... and... you gotta follow directions... just my opinion but I think there are some people who are pretty comfortable with hooking stuff up and just hoping it will work... and those are the kinda people who will have trouble with this. The CD Rom that walks you through the installation/connection is great... easy to understand and follow... but... many people just refuse to take the time to follow the directions. I know this for a fact because I am usually the one in my family to go over to their house and fix it for them.

Summary: Piece of junk! 2010-03-08
Comment: I purchased this from the local cable company because, as they so subtly implied, they would not be responsible for a product I did not purchase from them. What a racket! This piece of junk started giving me problems in the first year. Of course, the cable company blamed it on Netgear and Netgear blamed it on the cable company. It finally completely died as soon as the warranty was up. Again, Netgear refused to take any responsibility and the cable company wants to sell me another Netgear product! Netgear customer support was a joke. Not only could I barely understand the person I was speaking with in India but I was told there was nothing he could do about the problem and to contact my cable company. DO NOT BUY NETGEAR PRODUCTS!!

Summary: Works With Comcast 2010-03-07
Comment: I recently bought a new computer and could not get it connected to the Comcast internet connection in the house through a Motorola 6120 cable modem and Linksys WRT400N router. The computer would connect if plugged directly to the cable modem, but not the router.

After messing with it for 3 weeks, I finally discovered the Linksys WRT400N router is not compatible with Comcast service (or at least not without some serious hacking to make it work). I then found a list of approved Comcast routers buried on the Comcast website, so I bought this inexpensive Netgear WGR614 router, which was on the list. The WRT400N is not on the list.

The setup on the Netgear isn't as intuitive as the Linksys, and I had to try it twice, the second time disabling the Norton firewall and virus protection as instructed in the Netgear setup screen.

But, it worked -- the first time I was finally able to get my new computer reliably online in 3 weeks! I'm really pleased, and there is no noticeable difference between the N (100 MBPS) theoretical speed of the Linksys vs. the G (54 MBPS) speed of the Netgear on my Dell 1545 N laptop.

Lesson learned: Always check with your ISP first to make sure you buy an approved device! I won't buy Linksys again, it's Netgear forever for me!
