So you want your own VPN? Great. You can re-task a couple of old PCs to run openvpn or just get a couple of those routers.

When you flash a router with new firmware you always run a risk of 'bricking' the router and making it useless unless you have the means to recover it.
This involves opening the case and wiring up a serial port to the internal pins. Not hard for a tech guy, but why go through the hassle?

I bought two of these routers for about what you would pay anywhere else, but they were already flashed with tomato vpn/usb

Tomato is a variant of the firmware that makes setting up the vpn a lot easier via a gui. The added bonus of the USB module is that you can attach a USB drive directly to the router and the share it via samba, ftp or even http file sharing
