Summary: HAS NEVER DROPPED MY CONNECTION!!! 2007-09-20
Comment: First of all, this device is for home use, or small office at the most. This USR model 9107A ADSL2 modem/router/4 port switch was purchased as a replacement for the Siemens SpeedStream 4100 modem which came with my SBC/Yahoo DSL service. The Siemens did not have the combined swich/router device in the modem. When I added a router (a good Lynksys VPN router) I would lose my DSL connection on just about a daily basis. (I believe the reason was because both devices ran NAT which generated conflicting IP addresses). So I decided to simplify my system and get the DSL modem and switch/router in the same device.
I haven't dropped a connection in over a year since since I connected this USRobotics device. So...in my book this is a solution that works!!! Definitely worth the money (and you're going to need a router anyway, right?) I give this product four instead of five stars only because the setup manual doesn't tell you what I will now attempt to explain.
IF YOU REPLACE A ROUTER ON A SYSTEM THAT IS ALREADY CONFIGURED, the new router probably won't install and work, not even with the guaranteed easy to use, can't fail, installation CD. In fact, the manufacturer's own software most likely won't even detect the device! I have experienced this with several name brand devices and on differnt systems. When this happens YOU MUST CLEAR OUT THE OLD NETWORK CONNECTION SETTINGS FIRST. One way to do this is by running a few ipconfig commands from the command prompt. Here's how. Click on the Windows START button. Click on RUN. In the OPEN box type "cmd" and hit the ENTER key. The black screen that opens is the command prompt. Type "ipconfig/flushdns" and hit ENTER. Next Type "ipconfig/release" and enter. Those two commands clear out your prior connection settings. Next you connect the new modem/router and turn it on, and then type "ipconfig/renew" and hit ENTER. This command loads the connection information for the new device (but not the DSL service)into your system. After these steps the aforementioned Installation CD should do its job. The CD has the settings for SBC/Yahoo DSL and worked perfectly for me. It also has the settings for AOL, BellSouth, Covad, Earthlink, Qwest, Sprint, and Verizon. If your service isn't listed, the instruction manual tells you what information you need to get from your provider so that you can manually enter the info.
I purchased this from a local retailer, but hey, you gotta love the advice from the reviews at Amazon, my favorite place to shop!
